Abstract : Focusing his study on three issues regarding the patriarchal institution, the author examines first its genesis within the ancient church, showing that it stems from the church’s synodal nature and the Empire’s administrative structure. He then turns to today’s orthodox church, analysing what consequences the creation of new Patriarchies entailed, namely the withdrawal and isolation of regional churches. Finally, the author tackles the Patriarchal institution within Eastern catholic churches, underlining the fact that their bishops do not participate in synodality on a universal level as equals to the bishop of Rome, and concludes by laying out some perpectives for an acceptable exercise of the latter’s primacy for the orthodox.

Abstract : To mark the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council’s inauguration, the following article returns, ten years later, to the controversy that arose between theologians Ratzinger and Kasper over the relationship between local church and universal church. To inform this debate, the author draws upon Jean Zizioulas’ ecclesiology in order to revive certain cornerstones of his thinking that lead us to a more comprehensive understanding of the concept of communion, the relationship between local church and whole church as well as the safeguard of the church’s unity.

Abstract : The article begins by analysing the 1970 secret report on the co-celebration imagined by Paul VI and Athenagoras. The author presents the report’s theological sections published, without mention of their provenance, by a catholic member, Father Duprey in 1972 and by an orthodox member, Mgr Damaskinos, in 1974. Finally, he shows how another catholic member, dom. Emmanuel Lanne, after consulting with P. V. Borovoy of the Moscow Patriarchy, wrote on June 23rd 1970 to card. Willebrands in order to highlight the antecedent conditions to the projected co-celebration that were barely touched upon in the report, and the damaging consequences that this co-celebration would entail.

Abstract : After tracing the iconographic evolution of the Hospitality of Abraham, which Roublev substantially changed by removing the patriarch and Sarah in order to only represent the three angels, the author explains the influence of this problematic alteration by thoroughly analysing the tradition that distinguishes two types of icons : the hypostatic icon and the symbolic icon, each with its own singularities, and concludes that, by removing the historical elements, the Russian saint and iconographer transformed the conventional icon of the Hospitality of the Holy Trinity into a hypostatic icon representing the three divine persons, since he associates in a hypostatic fashion the conventional figures of the three angels to the three divine persons.
