2021/2 : Musique et œcuménisme

22,00

Abstract : The author first seeks to draw the outlines of a common repertoire by observing the phenomenon of musical borrowings from the 16th century Reformation and those of later times by noting significant examples of Protestant borrowings and, more recently, Catholic borrowings, as well as those worked out in ecumenical collections or those of a charismatic sensibility. He then analyzes the different functions and possible contexts of congregational singing in order to discern their implications for ecumenism.

Abstract : For the past 50 years churches in coastal Connecticut towns have united their choirs for a festival that has enjoyed great success. After recalling how this experience is rooted in the long tradition of choral singing in the United States and benefits from the existence of a Council of Churches, founded in 1971, the author describes the history of this festival and concludes with a few remarks on the reasons for its success and its ecumenical significance.

Abstract : After recalling how the Taizé Community has gradually grown in popularity, the authors pause at the place occupied by singing. They draw particular attention to the importance of lyrics, techniques and methods of composition, and the variety of forms and genres of the community’s repertoire, while highlighting the diversity of confessional sources.

Abstract : Born in the 1980’s in Australia, Hillsong Church is less a quest for Christian unity than an ambitious transnational corporation, establishing churches and distributing commercial music and related products to Christian consumers drawn in by a particular rhythm of religious sounds. After recalling the origins of the network, its objectives and practices, the author shows the functionning of its worship, drawing on the work of Goffman and DeNora, before examining the ecumenical significance of the phenomenon of hillsongization.
