Abstract : After a historical sketch outlining the roots of Orthodoxy on the African continent, the author deals with African initiatives leading to expansion south of the Sahara, and then with a spurred interest in the Greek mission in Kenya spearheaded by Archbishops Makarios of Cyprus and Anastasios, and then by Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria.

Abstract : After recalling the nature of the Tewahedo Orthodox Church in Ethiopia, its complex relationship with the state, and the rôle of renewal movements, the author cites various problems which the Church needs to face today : esoteric and therapeutic traditions, dissident movements, relations with other Churches, ethnic questions, women’s issues, artistic authenticity, ecology, revitalizing monastic life, and competition from sports and the Internet.

Abstract : Although this article recognizes external contributions, its aim is to show how African religiosity continiues to shape Post-Reformation Lutheranism. After calling to mind several historical elements, the author points out the rôle played by African Lutherans in the postcolonial period : some, like Kenya’s Bishop Obare or Ethiopia’s Mekane Yesus Evangelical Church, took a conservative stance, while others left a greater place for the Holy Spirit – as with Manas Buthelezi.

Abstract : Careful to point out the way in which the ecumenical and anti-Apartheid movements mutually reinforced one another, the author shows the slow growth, on the part of the Churches, of an awareness of the threat represented by the segregationist policies of the National Party elected in 1948, and then the joint efforts undertaken in opposition of the regime, and finally the weakening of the ecumenical movement in the wake of the coming to power of the ANC, and the growth of Pentecostal communities.
