Vasilios N. Makrides, Le concile panorthodoxe de 2016. Quelques réflexions sur les défis auxquels le monde orthodoxe doit faire face.

Résumé : Tout en reconnaissant que le Concile de Crète ne fut ni un concile panorthodoxe au sens strict du terme ni un aggiornamento comparable au Concile Vatican II, l’auteur reconnaît l’importance de cet évènement. Il replace d’abord ses décisions dans le contexte plus large de la complexité des relations interorthodoxes et de l’imbrication de l’orthodoxie dans la géopolitique du monde contemporain. Puis il s’interroge sur la signification et la portée des tensions entre œcuménistes et rigoristes dans le traitement du rapport aux autres chrétiens et sur celles d’une argumentation théologique conservatrice pour esquisser une ouverture sur le monde moderne. Mais le processus conciliaire orthodoxe n’en est encore qu’à ses débuts.

Abstract : While recognizing that the Council of Crete was neither a Panorthodox Council in the strict sense of the term nor an aggiornamento like Vatican II, the author recognizes the importance of this event. It returns the decisions to the place where they belong – namely, to the wider context of complex Interorthodox relations, and to the way Orthodoxy is enmeshed in the geopolitics of the contemporary world. Then, he wonders about the meaning and the importance of the tensions which exist between ecumenists and rigorists over the way they deal with other Christians, as well as those arising from the way in which a conservative theological argumentation affects their openness to the modern world. However, this Orthodox conciliar process has only just begun.

Résumé : Observateur luthérien au Concile de Crète, l’auteur invite à évaluer cette assemblée selon des critères orthodoxes et selon ce qui était possible. Dans cette perspective, il souligne d’abord que, malgré turbulences et défections, elle a pu se tenir au terme d’un processus sérieux et nuancé, sans provoquer de schisme. Puis il examine les textes conciliaires sur les relations aux autres chrétiens et au monde en concluant que l’orthodoxie est entrée alors dans la modernité en se montrant à la fois fidèle à la tradition et capable de s’exprimer sous forme critique et dialogale.

Abstract : The author, who was a Lutheran observer at the Council of Crete, invites us to evaluate this gathering according to Orthodox standards, as well as to what was possible. From this perspective, he emphasizes first of all that, in spite of all the commotion and defections, the Council was nevertheless able to take place at the end of serious and nuanced process without, in the end, leading to a schism. Then he examines conciliar texts relating to relations with other Christians and with the world, eventually concluding that, at the Council, Orthodoxy entered into modernity, showing that it was able to be faithful to tradition, and at the same time to express itself both critically and dialogically.
